| In Toolbox 1 we learned how to orientate the map at controls so that we leave in the right direction.
In Toolbox No's 2 & 3 stay with the map in your hand and I hope will help you manage the map whilst you are competing.
No 2. .Fold up the Map.
When you have gone through the start and have picked up your map have a quick look at the course shape, locate where you are ,look at the route to the first control, orientate your map. Now you are holding a A4 or A3 size piece of paper or bigger. you do not need to see all the map , fold it up so all you are looking at is the route to the next control and maybe the one after. this should reduce the size of what you are looking at to about 75 mm(3") x75 mm (3"). This is easier to hold and less to look at you can remain focused on the route ahead. If as now seems more to be the norm your map is in a sealed polythene bag folding can be a bit tricky so pierce the bag let the air out and it will fold easily.
No 3. Thumbing.
With the map now folded and orientated in one of your hands the next trick is to use your thumb to pin point exactly where you are. and as you pass features that are marked on the map you adjust the map so that your thumb keeps your position marked on the map. This takes away the need to keep stopping and your eyes wandering all over the map to try and find out where you are.
Both of the above are simple and only takes seconds to do but may save you minutes of searching. The first few times it may seem awkward but keep trying until it becomes a habit, a good one at that.
